NotebookLM is free, which is great. But it has limits — manual uploads only, restricted source count per notebook, no RSS distribution, and everything lives inside Google’s ecosystem.

The most common complaints about NotebookLM:
audiclip is free during early access. Save article URLs, and each morning two AI hosts turn them into a daily podcast. Standard RSS feed for any podcast app. The key difference from NotebookLM: it’s automatic and ongoing, not one-off.
ElevenLabs offers GenFM in their ElevenReader app with 10 hours of free audio per month. The voice quality is the best available. Supports articles, PDFs, eBooks, and YouTube videos.
Speechify offers a free tier with basic text-to-speech and has expanded into podcast-style formats. Summarization and voice Q&A features are also available. The free tier is limited in voice options and usage.
SparkPod is a simpler AI podcast generator with a free tier. Paste a URL or text and get a podcast episode. Less polished than the others but free to start.
NotebookLM remains free and is the category creator. If you don’t mind manual uploads and Google lock-in, it’s still a solid option for one-off deep dives. Audio Overviews support customizable hosts and interactive Q&A.
